"Pool Room began in January 2008 when I called my longtime friend Joshua Saunders and we started discussing the possibility of working on a narrative film together.
As visual artists we recognized a lot of overlap in our interests concerning aesthetics and the kinds of environments and themes that we were drawn to, and decided to tell a story about a character that's ever present but rarely seen. I wanted to focus on beauty that exists in quiet and ordinary, a story about someone who's practically invisible, while also searching for subtle humor in the day-to-day situations. These ideas were in tune with a character that Josh had started to sculpt a few years prior, through video sketches and photographs, and thus we began developing this character and story.
Beginning May 26, 2008, I drove my car for three days down to Austin, TX where I would sleep on the floor for a month.
We worked with our friends and had very limited resources; the project was funded primarily out of pocket. Knowing (while simultaneously not knowing) what we were getting into, we joined the camp of films made without a script and instead used a detailed storyline as a springboard. Some of the characters' motivations changed, and events in the story were adapted as we shot- it was a very fluid process, very enjoyable.
I cut the film in the summer of 2009 and then sent it to my friend Brett for scoring and some additional sound work. It's been a long road and an amazing learning experience. Feel free to say hello or send any positive feedback/constructive criticism- that'd be sweet."
